Ron Wise's
World Paper Money

Permanent Note:

DONATED SCANS MUST BE SCANS THAT THE CONTRIBUTOR HAS PERSONALLY MADE OF NOTES THAT THEY OWN OR ACTUAL NOTES THAT THEY HAVE HELD IN THEIR OWN HANDS AND WERE ABLE TO MAKE A SCAN.  More and more frequently I am receiving scans that are obtained from other sites to include Central Bank sites or reference books, I cannot use scans obtained in this manner.  Even if a site says that the scan can be copied, the rights to the image still remain with the originator.  Persons who donate scans obtained in this manner (without giving the exact origin of the scan) are in violation of copyright laws, regardless of their good intentions and all scans they submitted will be deleted.  The bottom line is, you can't contribute something as yours that you have no right to give!

Information Sheet w/ Scanning Guidelines

When you select the "banknote" link, you will go to a graphical directory which divides the collection into 7 main areas. Click on the continent/area you are interested in. You will now be able to select the specific country of interest from the table of choices. The individual country pages list all notes for that country that I currently have or scans I have had donated. Generally speaking, the listing format for a note is as follows: Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (SCWPM) number (either Modern, 1960 & Prior or Specialized versions), denomination and actual date or series run dates on the note, if any, and/or the known issue date in parenthesis.

General Format for File Names:  (Old Format)

Digits 1-3: First three characters of the country name (or as close as possible, e.g., chile = chl, while china = chi.)

Digits 4-6: These digits roughly equal the SCWMP number, the underscore is replaced when four digits are needed for the Pick number.

Digit 7: Normally an underscore except when needed for large SCWMP numbers.

Digit 8: f = front, b = back, blank = no back to the note so only the front was scanned.

General Format for File Names:  (New Format)

Full country name followed immediately with a "P" and an SCWMP identifier number.

A dash and denomination.

A dash and printed year on note or (issued year in parenthesis if not printed).

A dash and the word:  donated

Your initials immediately after the word donated

An underscore and either an "f" for front or "b" for back.

Example:  CountryNameP#-250Blobnicks-1983-donatedxxx_f.jpg

Note:  a year date in parenthesis denotes the year the note was issued, may be used in conjunction with printed date or with no printed date.  Example -1994(1996)- or -ND(1996)-

Scanning Guidelines

1.  Provide individual obverse and reverse scans at no less than 70 d.p.i and no more than 150 d.p.i. (ideally, 90-96 d.p.i.).

2.  Format:  .jpg

3.  Compression:  no more than 15%

4.  Files named in accordance with the "General Format for File Names (New Format)" above.

5.  Scan notes using a background that provides sharp contrast to the borders of the note being scanned.  Usually, black or dark blue, etc., work best.

6.  Please try to keep notes horizontal!  Notes scanned at an angle have to be manipulated, causing substantial scan quality degradation.  Also, I end up spending large amounts of time trying to fix what shouldn't have been broke in the first place.

7.  It is better to scan slightly dark than too light.

8.  It is better to scan at higher resolution that too low a resolution.

Bottom line - it is easier to take away what I don't need that to try to add what isn't there!

9.  Preferred submissions are notes that are not currently on the site or scans that fundamentally improve current scans.

10.  Normally, no more than three examples of any given note will be posted (mine if applicable and the next two best submissions).  This means that eventually, any donated scan could be overwritten by another scan.

11.  Scans can be "zipped" or as individual attachments.

12.  If you submit scans and your email is returned for other than a wrong address, try resubmitting the next day (it probably means my mailbox is full and I haven't had a chance to empty it yet).

Disclaimer:

Please consider the file name (the name of the actual file as opposed to the web page entry name) to be nothing more than a unique identifier for me to keep my notes and my sanity straight. SCWMP numbers can change frequently, and I will only attempt to keep the web page entry current, not the actual file name. If I have obviously gone astray in my numbering, please e-mail me, I'm not an expert and I am prone to mistakes.
